about the artist

Joseph P. McGovern received his BFA in Studio Art from the Henry Radford Hope School of Fine Arts at Indiana University in Bloomington. His interests range from the absurd to the mundane, from formal precision to formlessness, and his artworks are often intentionally ambiguous.

At times conceptual, and other times functional or process based, Joseph’s artworks are often minimal, natural and aesthetically meticulous. He credits being trained both as a traditional potter and classical percussionist for his appreciation of intentional and unintentional mark making and for his attention to detail. His artwork varies widely, taking shape in ceramics, sculpture, photography, video, performance art, musical composition and other time-based art.

Joseph has worked as a Production Potter Assistant, and a Ceramics Instructor leading workshops in hand building, wheel throwing, clay monotype printmaking, and sculpture to both children and adults.  He currently lives and works in San Francisco, California.
